Specialized Care for Urinary Incontinence in Men

Urinary incontinence is not a disease itself, but rather a symptom of another condition. Let the multidisciplinary care team at University Hospitals, who are experts in urinary incontinence in men and its causes, help put you on the path to recovery.

Our highly trained and experienced team of urinary health experts have advanced diagnostic testing and treatments to help reduce or eliminate urinary incontinence symptoms so you can resume your normal daily activities faster and with greater confidence.

Expertise to Treat All Types of Incontinence

Urinary incontinence can occur in different ways. For example, some urinary incontinence, called stress incontinence, only occurs during physical exertion such as heavy lifting or exercise or also when laughing, coughing or sneezing. Urge incontinence is when there is a sudden need to urinate.

Often, men with an enlarged prostate, called benign prostate hyperplasia, experience overflow incontinence due to the gland weakening the bladder muscle. Men who have been treated for prostate cancer, either with radiation or surgery, may experience urinary incontinence. Other causes include:

  • Aging
  • Obesity
  • Medications
  • Nerve damage or related conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis

The urologists at University Hospitals can help you better understand the cause of your urinary incontinence. We will work with our multidisciplinary team across a range of clinical specialties to help manage those conditions that are contributing to your symptoms.

Our experienced urology team will conduct tests to learn more about your specific symptoms. One test, called the urodynamic study, consists of three parts:

  • Cystometrogram
  • Sphincter electromyography
  • Intra-abdominal pressure

This study evaluates the function of your bladder and urethra and helps

our specialists determine how well the urinary outflow system does its job of storing, transporting and expelling urine. In just 60 to 90 minutes, this test allows us to understand the issues so our team can determine customized treatment plan that helps significantly reduce or eliminate your urinary incontinence symptoms.

Range of Specialized Urinary Incontinence Treatment Options

Urinary incontinence treatment options depend on many factors. Any other health conditions, your age and lifestyle all must be considered. Our multidisciplinary teams also include physical therapists who help men strengthen core and pelvic floor muscles to improve bladder control. Other treatment options include:

  • Bladder training
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Medication
  • Electrical nerve stimulation

More aggressive treatments may include surgical procedures to correct or reconstruct genital or urinary systems to their proper function. Many of these procedures use only tiny incisions, fiber optic scopes or robotic instruments for greater surgical precision, faster recoveries and better outcomes.

New treatments are also being developed based research conducted at UH through our research and clinical trials. One of our studies has shown patient-derived stem cells can correct stress incontinence.

Above all, the providers and staff at University Hospitals are available to answer all your questions and discuss the many treatment options available.
