JP’s Story

JP Southern“Being a professional racer at the age of fourteen is something a lot of kids dream about. Thankfully, this was my reality. I had been racing go-karts since I was five and was one of the top-ranked ‘karters’ in the country. I felt like I had the world in the palm of my hand, but that would soon change.

“I was at the biggest race in the world, held in Las Vegas when my brakes went out during my first practice session. When I crashed into the wall, it seemed like any other crash until I stood up. My legs crumpled beneath me. As it turned out, I had broken both my ankles. I’ll never forget the look of shock on the doctors’ faces in Las Vegas where I had my first surgery. I was told I would likely never race again.

“When I learned that I would need a second surgery back in Cleveland, I was heartbroken. UH Sports Medicine physician, Shana Miskovsky, MD, performed my second surgery. Dr. Miskovsky and my physical therapist helped me stay focused on what I needed to do in the moment. They motivated me to keep going. I can’t thank them enough for getting me back to where I am today. Thanks to the amazing staff at University Hospitals, I was able to make a full recovery and am now a full-time professional racer in the F3 Americas series.” – JP Southern
