Management of Chronic Leukemia from an Expert Team
Chronic leukemia is treated by a team of hematologic malignancy experts at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. When leukemia occurs, cells in the bone marrow do not mature normally so they do not fight infection as they should. These cells then grow and divide, crowding out normal cells and moving into the blood stream. Our team treats the following types of chronic leukemia:
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
- Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML)
- Other myeloproliferative disorders such as polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocytemia (ET), myelofibrosis (MF), Philadelphia negative CML
- Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
Integrated Treatment Options
The chronic leukemia care team provides an integrated approach to treatment with input from a team of hematologic malignancy experts. Care is based on a case-by-case review, with personalized treatment to meet individual needs. Treatment plans can cover a range of therapies, including:
- Careful monitoring, with watchful waiting, until treatment is needed
- Targeted therapies
- Stem cell transplantation
- Radiation therapy
- Leukemia-specific clinical trials
Stem Cell Therapy
Our stem cell transplant program has been offering advanced bone marrow, peripheral blood stem cell, and cord blood transplant services for more than 40 years. Our multidisciplinary team of specialists provides individualized treatment plans for each patient and uses the latest stem cell therapy techniques to provide excellent care and the best possible outcomes.
As a critical component to integrated treatment options, our cancer specialists provide a range of leukemia-specific clinical trials that offer innovative therapies. These safe and more tolerable treatments offer alternative options that otherwise may not be available.
