Non-surgical Weight Loss Management

Obalon Intragastric Balloon System for Long Lasting Weight Loss Results

The Obalon® Balloon System is a non-surgical weight loss procedure available at University Hospitals, and is the first and only FDA-approved swallowable balloon system for weight loss. This treatment is a good option for patients who are up to 100 overweight and are looking for a weight loss treatment without surgery. Obalon can help patients lose up to twice as much weight as with diet and exercise alone.

How Does Obalon Gastric Balloon Work?

Obalon Gastric Balloon helps you lose weight loss by taking up space in your stomach so you eat less. With Obalon, three balloons are placed in the stomach for six months. During treatment, patients also should receive professional nutrition and exercise support to help them make the lifestyle changes necessary for losing weight and keeping it off long-term.

The Non Surgical Intragastric Balloon Procedure

The placement of each Obalon balloon typically takes less than 10 minutes and doesn’t require a surgical operation. During the procedure, the patient swallows a capsule containing a small intragastric balloon, and then his or her physician inflates the balloon. Patients usually can resume normal activities immediately after the balloon placement procedure.

After six months, all three Obalon intragastric balloons are removed in one procedure with light sedation. The removal procedure is typically no longer than 15 minutes.

Gastric Balloon Diet and Exercise

The Obalon Balloon System can assist with your weight loss efforts, but your weight loss success is also dependent on your readiness to develop new lifestyle skills. The degree of long-term weight loss will depend on your ability to modify your lifestyle and maintain these behaviors after the balloons are removed.

The treatment should be accompanied with a healthy diet and exercise program during the time you have the balloons and is recommended for six months after the balloons are removed.
