UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is the children’s hospital for University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Our mission is “To Heal. To Teach. To Discover.” Our vision is “Advancing the Science of Health & the Art of Compassion.” UH Cleveland Medical Center has many awards for excellence in 2016: Clinical Excellence, LGBT Healthcare Equality, employee training and workforce development, innovation and driving growth in diversity and inclusion, and environmental stewardship. Rainbow has received awards from Leapfrog three times in the last six years and the Pinnacle Award Celebration for the Patient Experience (2017). UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is a full-service children’s hospital with experts in 16 medical and 12 surgical subspecialties and is ranked as one of the American’s Best Children’s Hospitals in nine pediatrics specialties by U.S. News & World Report and in the top 20 in neonatology, pulmonology, neurology/neurosurgery and orthopedics. It is designated as a Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The Department of Pediatrics comprises approximately 165 full-time faculty, including 49 researches with 126 grant awards. In 2016, Department funding was over $28 million in federal grants, with a ranking of No. 6 for pediatric departments at medical schools and No. 11 when independent children’s hospitals are included. In 2016, the Rainbow faculty produced more than 130 peer reviewed publications.

The Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship training program is in the Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics and Psychology, which includes 18 faculty: eight developmental-behavioral pediatricians, six pediatric psychologists, and four neuropsychologists.

The program features comprehensive interdisciplinary training that is organized and implemented by leaders in the field of developmental-behavioral pediatrics, as well as psychology. This program continues a long and valuable tradition of training excellence. Under the current leadership of Nancy Roizen, MD, new clinical programs, collaborations, and training techniques have been developed that provide added value.

Key elements of the training program from its long history of success include:

  • Emphasis on leadership training in a comprehensive program that integrates clinical care, teaching, research and advocacy/public policy experiences
  • Experienced interdisciplinary teams, many of whom are leaders in the field of developmental-behavioral pediatrics, pediatric psychology and neuropsychology
  • Close integration of the training programs and divisional activities with those of other pediatric subspecialties and other professional disciplines
  • Strong tradition of excellence in developmental-behavioral pediatrics and child health research
  • Innovative models of clinical care in specialized areas: adoption, care of children after disasters, sleep problems, chronic illness and obesity, developmental-behavioral pediatricians as resources to PCPs, and follow-up of high risk infants
  • Special areas of expertise: adoption, autism spectrum disorder, cochlear implants, Down syndrome, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, transition care
  • Opportunities for clinical care and research with culturally diverse populations and interdisciplinary collaborative research
  • Training initiatives in child advocacy, global health and mental health
  • Supportive institutional environment, including resource infusion from the Department of Pediatrics
  • Strong collaboration with other departmental, university-based and community programs
