“It was always my goal to be here.” It’s the short answer when Dr. Laura Goldberg is asked why she switched her medical practice to University Hospitals in the fall of 2018. After training at UH and a fellowship and pediatric practice at another Cleveland hospital system, Dr. Goldberg saw in UH’s Sports Medicine Department what she had been waiting for – a dedication to pediatric sports medicine.

“I love the growing athlete. The issues are different. The difference between a div 1 and 3. The love of the game. They are so bright and have so much to look forward to. There is so much more

Dr. Goldberg brings first-hand athletic experience to her practice. The mother of two was a marathon runner, an Olympic level sailor, and until a 2017 leg fracture, a competitive ski racer. “Empathy for how injury affects you is so important. Mentally, to understand pain-  how you need to be pushed, but also allowance to accept there will be frustrating times- every physician should be on crutches at one point,” she says.

Today’s driven athletes can find downtime to heal very difficult, which Dr. Goldberg says requires a communicative approach. “I involve the family in treatment, but I try to approach the student athlete rather than the parents or coaches. You can get a sense from them how they're feeling. I'm their advocate,” she says. “I’ll treat all levels of athleticism the same- like they are world-class athletes.”
